The first race of the year is never going to be easy. What with the month or so before where our main macros are After Eight mints, pigs in blankets and a pile of panettone that just seemed to appear out of nowhere. Seriously we have absolutely no idea where it came from. We’re not even sure where to buy panettone. It’s dealt with now though.
So, with our shorts slightly tighter and the decaying remnants of WHAM!’s Last Christmas still making a passing appearance in our minds, we headed over to Brixton for our first race of the year, the RunThrough Brixton 10k.
We may have mentioned this before, but we’re big fans of the RunThrough events. They’re a ruddy nice bunch that put on races that are well organised, friendly and convenient. They also have the best custom medals in the game. And you know how obsessed we are with medals.
We’d never been to Brockwell park before, so it was nice to take part in a 10k on fresh ground. It’s a quant little park with paths that roll up and down the undulating grass. If you can suffer the uphill climbs then you’re greeted with some impressive views into the distance. There’s even a pretty nice view of the Shard that we weren’t expecting.
But yeah, the hills. The last RunThrough event we took part in was the Battersea 10k, a route with about as much undulation as a marble work surface. We turned up in Brixton expecting the same. It wasn’t. The three lap route takes you up and down as you weave around the park, with two hills offering a fair bit of resistance. Although this may be partly due to our somewhat pathetic training plan over the Christmas period.
If you can handle the slight hills though, RunThrough have managed to put on another great little event. A great 10k that’s perfectly suited to beginners as well as anyone hoping for something a little bit more taxing. And as always, when you get a medal like this at the end, it all seems worth it.
The quick review:
Route: 3 park laps
Supporters: A few people
Goody Bag: Homemade flapjacks, banana, water
How many runners: About 500
